Having the right attitude series
Preached at Churchill Baptist Church
(31/12/2022 → 2/04/2023 )
The church at Philippi was founded by Paul and his associates on his second missionary journey in the early 50s. Paul wrote this letter a decade later in circa 62/63 A.D. to them because of the division that was occurring in the church because of two warring women. Paul was facing many hardships of his own being under house arrest himself chained 24/7 to four squads of two soldiers continuously. Despite this Paul was able to find joy in his circumstances and despite the people around him. He received very little help but knew how to trust God in all circumstances and he wanted to encourage the Philippian church likewise. Like in many other churches of the time, Judaizers were like dogs nipping at the heels trying to convert the young believers to Judaism once again. Judaizers and some false teachers try to get Christians to look backwards into the past saying to be real believers they must keep the Sabbath, be circumcised, follow dietary laws and Jewish feast days once again but Paul emphasises that Christians live in the future tense as we look forward to our Lord and Saviour returning and the transformation of our lowly bodies.
This letter is primarily about joy. The difference between joy and happiness is where each is found. Joy is found in Jesus whereas happiness comes from favourable, temporary and external factors. That means that happiness comes and goes whereas joy is continuously present despite the surrounding possible joy-robbers of circumstances, people, things and worry.
At the end of the day we need to develop a right attitude and keep our attitudes above the horizon. Do that and we will gain altitude!
