Hebrews

Pressing on to the end series

Preached at Churchill Baptist Church
(15/5/2022 → 25/09/2022 )

No one knows who authored the letter to the Hebrew Christian believers but the first-century Jewish believers were undergoing intense persecution and discouragement.  They were being tempted to revert to their old religion, religio licita (the legal religion) which was approved by the Roman Empire supposedly after the fire of Rome in AD 64.  This temptation was real because it would mean an end to persecution.  Similarly, in today's church, we are faced with increasing persecution and pressures from the world and things would be so much easier if we would just conform to the standards of the world.

This series encourages us to press on to the end without compromise and to not fall away.  What else do we turn to?  There is no other answer except Jesus.  Many scholars hold to the view that those who fall away were not true believers to begin with but this series in Hebrews seeks to prove that true believers can fall away and that the doctrine of OSAS (Once Saved Always Saved) does not hold true.  The book of Hebrews affirms that apostasy is possible and the author seeks to encourage the Jewish Christians of the 1st century by reminding them of the great faith of the heroes of old throughout the five earlier dispensations or ages in which God has acted since creation up to the church age.
