Persevere Series – Suffering
Preached at Minden Baptist Church

1 Peter is a letter from the Apostle Peter that instructs us to persevere despite where we find ourselves in the world as we head towards the end of all things. In the 1st century when this book was written it was written to Jews scattered across the known world to encourage them as they live as strangers in their Roman world and Roman culture.
As God's people, we also find ourselves today in the 21st century so close to the end that we need to persevere in being holy despite the crazy world and culture we find ourselves in. We really are exiles or aliens or strangers in the world and we are just passing through until we get to our final home. Noah found himself to be in a crazy, time-limited world like we are. He had 100 years to preach repentance before a huge flood was coming, a judgment so devastating that they needed to take refuge in an ark. And 1 Peter is the same only this time in the next decade or so there is the final judgment coming, this time by fire. The warning bell has been sounded and we need to get into the ark of safety before it is too late.
What is that ark of safety in these end times? No different than the first time. An ark of refuge only to be found in the very words of God. We need to arm ourselves with that knowledge of the Bible.
As you listen to this series you will find that Peter covers a wide range of topics but in his first letter there is no preamble, no introduction, no niceties, he just dives straight into the deep end of the pool and talks about the doctrine of election and foreknowledge. Friends, I am not going to lie to you, what we are about to study in these letters, you might be hanging on by your fingernails at times. But please get what you can as you listen. I believe God will challenge you and show you some really great things.
